At its core, Innerstate is about movement, self-discovery, transformation, and interconnectedness. Highways being the metaphors for searching and exploration, while the inner state is another physical system of pathways to travel through as well. The physical interstate and the mental inner state mirror one another, suggesting that while we may experience ourselves as individuals moving through separate lives, we are all part of the same larger systems: different points along the same road, connected by invisible ties that bind us.

The album draws connections between universal systems and their microcosms, and between individual experience and collective truth. The way planets orbit and people gravitate toward one another; the intricate networks of our bodies, brains, and cells mirrored in the sprawling systems of city streets and highways. These patterns of movement, connection, and interdependence exist at every scale, suggesting that the experiences that shape us as individuals are ultimately part of a shared human experience. What happens within one person can ripple outward into the world, just as the world around us shapes what happens within us.

The album was produced, mixed and mastered by GRAMMY Award winners Vance Powell and Pete Lyman in Nashville, TN, bringing together the band’s most expansive studio effort yet. Powell’s production captures the spontaneity and organic interplay at the heart of the band while giving each song space to unfold as it was written. Mastering engineer Pete Lyman completes the sonic journey, translating the depth and dynamics of Innerstate into its final polished form.

I thought Vance was going to show us all these secrets to making an amazing record, but really he gave us the freedom to do whatever we wanted and just helped guide us along the way. A lot of his advice boiled down to, ‘If it sounds good, it is good,’ which was really helpful in keeping us from overthinking everything, even when we were surrounded by all this incredible gear like the grand piano I played on ‘Grand Ol’ Time’ and the Korg Polysix we used to create the intro to ‘Intuition.’”
